My Health Journey

You each have your own story; your own reason why you're here, searching for answers and wanting to become healthier and more whole. This is a snapshot of my own. This is what led me to learn more about the foods we eat and how it affects our bodies the way it does. This is what eventually led me to study Nutrition. My dream is to use the journey that God has led me on, the gifts that he has blessed me with and the heart that he as given me, to help others. In whatever way that is, my dream is to help you take ownership of your health and turn it around for the better so you can carry on with your own story; the unique and powerful story God has written for you, all while feeling and being your absolute best.

"My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.” — 2 Corinthians 12:9

Now, a little about me:

If it's even a thing, I was born anxious. For as long as I can remember, I would make myself sick by pondering life (seriously!) and even get panic attacks as a result. I've always been a deep thinker and at times, my thoughts were too much for me to handle! I was nauseous all of the time, thanks to the anxiety and mysterious stomach issues. I had a difficult time wanting to eat and when I did, I frequently felt bloated, sick and tired afterwards. For years, doctors sent me on a merry-go-round of possible verdicts ranging everywhere from acid reflux to celiac disease, but with no actual resolutions or solid answers.

Throughout the years, my relationship with food suffered. Body image overtook my thinking and I frequently went back and forth between eating too little or too much. I would deprive myself, then binge. I did not have peace with food.

As time went on, I slowly noticed a connection with how my body (and mind) felt with certain foods compared to others. I would dabble in the health and wellness world here and there, learning more and more each time. I would take steps back while then moving forward, slowly leading me to where I am today.

In early 2017, my skin started to react out of the blue, developing severe rashes on my eyelids, chin and scalp. This accompanied terrible hormonal acne after getting off the birth control pill and even a bout of purpura. This led to several visits to the dermatologist only to be told to use steroid creme, antibiotics and even receiving a "It could be Lupus" comment in passing.

Not wanting this to be the end-all and feeling more confused than ever, I decided to take things in my own hands and started digging. In every single case, it always went back to the foods I ate. My eyes were slowly opening to the fact that food has a direct connection to our overall health.

I eventually visited a naturopath that discovered several food intolerances which is a serious sign of "leaky gut". Not truly understanding the issue at hand, I continued my unhealthy eating patterns, not nourishing my body or healing my gut like it so desperately desired. This led to terrifying episodes of PMDD (as a result of hormonal imbalances) and with the help of negative life situations, I fell into a debilitating pit of depression and anxiety. Towards the end of the same year, I got diagnosed with Hashimoto’s, an autoimmune disease of the thyroid. Oh my goodness, was 2017 a tough one!

After changing jobs and taking time to focus on healing physically, emotionally and spiritually, God put it on my heart to take this story of mine and use it to help a bigger audience. Through these health challenges, he was telling me that nourishing my body was not a phase or some fad to follow. When eating a diet rich in nutrient-dense whole foods, my body started to heal. Skin issues cleared up, my hormones balanced out and my Hashimoto’s antibodies are rapidly decreasing! I can also eat without looking 5 months pregnant afterwards, a definite win in my book! Throughout this time, I also learned that the products we use on our bodies and in our homes severely impact our biological processes (from skin issues to hormonal imbalances) which inspired me to ditch the cheap, synthetic products and intentionally fill my home with non-toxic, high-quality items.

I'm still on the road to healing but I can truthfully say I would be in a much different place if I continued with those unhealthy, self-sabotaging eating habits that I was so used to. Now, when my health ebbs and flows, it’s not an endless chase of symptoms and medications. Instead, it’s going back to the foundations to figure out the root of the problem and re-adjusting diet and lifestyle as needed.

To add on, I don't feel deprived with this lifestyle. You see, God created us to enjoy the foods he put on this earth for us to consume and man oh man, did he create some delicious food! Unfortunately, the foods we now eat on a daily basis are denatured and devoid of nutrients which has led to disease, degeneration and digestive issues. No wonder there are so many gluten-free, dairy-free, egg-free, everything-free products on the market nowadays. We're sick. Our bodies cannot digest things anymore nor were they ever meant to digest all of the fake ingredients that consist in these "foods" nowadays.

There's a solution though. And a simple one, at that. Let's go back to the beginning — back when our ancestors were eating a nutrient-dense, whole foods diet that was properly prepared. Back when there was very little (or no) disease. Let’s take note of their traditions and wisdom. They knew what they were doing!

I'm on this journey with you. Always learning, always growing. I cannot wait to be a part of your story. Thank you for being a part of mine!
