Natural Immune-Boosting Ideas

Below are several ways to naturally boost your immune system (to prevent sickness) and powerful ways to tackle sickness (when something comes on strong and fast).

Drink bone broth

Approximately 80% of our immune system is located in our guts. If your gut isn’t healthy, your body is going to have a really hard time fighting off bugs. Bone broth is incredibly helpful to our gut which in turn, is incredibly helpful to our immune system.

Take a probiotic daily

Probiotics are essentially “good” bacteria for the gut. As I mentioned above, our guts need to be happy and healthy in order for our immune system to do it’s job to the best of it’s ability. Probiotic-rich foods do the same thing. (Think kimchi or sauerkraut, but just look out for the added sugars, etc.)

Drink plenty of filtered water

This is not the time for gatorade or sugary drinks — Pure, filtered water removes waste, flushes toxins, regulates body temperature, transports nutrients and so much more. It’s essential for our immune system’s health. Aim for half your body weight in ounces a day.

Stay away from sugar and processed foods

These will degrade your immune system faster than just about anything else! Focus on eating real, whole foods especially around this season.

Reduce stress

Did you know that our bodies react the same way to stress as it does to sugar? Our body and immune system don’t like it! If you want to stay healthy this flu season, now’s the time to be ultra aware of your mind-set and schedule. Don’t overdo it. Take time for yourself, relax, go for gentle walks, do yoga…

Get plenty of sleep

This is the chance for your body to heal and restore. Rub some lavender essential oil on the soles of your feet, diffuse it by your bedside and rest up!

Vitamin C

And no, I don’t mean the Emergen-C packets. Have you looked at the ingredients on one of those things lately? Not good. You want to stick with vitamin C in it’s whole-food form, not a synthetic version (as in ascorbic acid) or loaded with corn syrup and colors. This is my all time favorite option here. Would you just look at those ingredients? Actual vitamin C from actual food. Who woulda thought!
