How to Try Essential Oils When You Don't Want to be "That" Person

I get it. I’ve been there. I’m still there. Essential oils get a bad rap and for some, it’s a four letter word. It took time for me to be open to the idea of even trying them. I didn’t understand the hype and quite honestly, I didn’t know where to start. Like, what am I supposed to do with this bottle of lemon? And of course, I didn’t want to be that person. You know the one. The one who you try to avoid or else they’re just going to try and sell you some little bottles of who knows what. The one who thinks they’re a cure-all for anything and everything. The one who lives and breathes all things essential oils.

I thought those same things and still think them at times! But then I became desperate. Before getting diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, my body was crying out for help, and I didn’t know it. I had been fighting off an awful, ever-changing virus for months and the final stretch of it brought on terrible headaches for weeks on end. I was desperate and needed relief, especially when the pain wouldn't even respond to over the counter medicine. I finally gave in and ordered a diffuser and therapeutic-grade essential oils.

As someone who cares what’s in their home and out on display, I hear you and I see you. As someone who doesn’t like doing things just because everyone else is doing them… I’m with you there as well. But as someone who also cares about what goes in and on their body, I had to get past those trivial reservations and give it an honest shot. Ever since trying them out 2 years ago, I was sold. It was a small, simple addition that took the edge off those headaches while I dug deeper to understand what was going on with my body (remember — they don’t cure anything!). After becoming a Holistic Nutritionist and truly learning the effects of what we eat, use and surround ourselves with, I’m even more of a fan than before (and have found so much more success and uses since then).

When you hear the words “essential oils” you may think of a specific person trying to get you to use them and buy them, which inevitably leaves a sour taste in your mouth. I wouldn’t blame you… While I do have negative experiences with people and other multi-level-marketing companies, I luckily have not had that experience with essential oils. I naturally started using them after hearing such good things from a fellow NTP, Carrie Vitt. I started using them with no intention of getting in the business but since then, it’s become such a natural fit with holistic, non-toxic living that I don’t mind helping others see the benefits themselves, without any of the pressure. It’s just like anything else I share on here — allow me to inform you and then take it or leave it :)

Here are a few suggestions if you’re dabbling with the idea of essential oils but you don’t want to be “that” person:

  1. You know the saying “you can’t judge a book by it’s cover”? Same goes here, my friend. Try to let go of any pre-conceived notions of essential oils or the business side of it. Let go of how it “looks”. There’s a lot more to it than this and you know what? You can decide if you want to support someone in their business or do it on your own. Totally up to you! Focus on the product itself, the oils. They are quite literally extracts from plants, having been used since before Bible days. When you experience relief and results, you don’t care about how it “looks” anymore.

  2. Do your research. Just like you don’t want pesticides, chemicals and fillers in your food, the same goes for essential oils. When I support a company with my money (whether it be food, cleaning products or clothing), transparency is everything to me. If a company is not up-front with what’s in their products and do not have proper testing standards for them, move along.

  3. Start at your own pace. Don’t feel pressured to dive head first with hundreds of oils that you may or may not use. Start slow and be intentional with each and every bottle you buy (that’s what I did and continue to do!). Think of an area in your life that you would like to support. Restful sleep? Try out calming, relaxing oils. Family always sick? Look for oils that naturally support the immune system. Need a pep in your step? Focus on uplifting and energizing oils to use throughout the day.

You get to decide what you put in, on and around your body. You get to decide how, when and why you introduce anything into your life and into your routine. Don’t let a trend, a person or a negative experience get in the way of doing good things for your health, no matter what it may be! Take it or leave it, my friends :)
